The month of February has been proclaimed as the National African American History Month calling “upon public officials, educators, librarians, and all the people of the United States to observe this month with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities.” This “federally recognized, nationwide celebration” is something we want to draw your attention to as we consider and reflect on the many significant roles that African Americans have played in shaping, not only cultural but scientific, political and economic climate of our nation.
CNN recently wrote a short article on the man behind the holiday, how it came about and why he picked February. We invite to take a quick hop over and read it.
One of the leading resources on this subject is the Association for the Study of African American Life and History:
This year’s theme, as you’ll see on their website is Black Migrations, “emphasizes the movement of people of African descent to new destinations and subsequently to new social realities.” We encourage you to peruse through their site as they have free downloadable pdf available along with other publications you can check out. You can also look at past themes dating back to the 1920s.
