Happy almost weekend, everyone! For our Fill-Me-In Friday, we have some exciting news to share with you today but before we do, I (Cheryl) wanted to share an amusing story that happened last week as I drove my youngest son and his friend to their big brothers’ basketball games. Both boys energetically talked about what they were going to do while the basketball game was going on. My son’s friend enthusiastically shared his idea. “Why don’t we play Robin Hood and you can be the Sheriff or one of the merry men?” To which my son replied, “Perfect! We made bows and arrows in class today! I’ll grab it from my backpack!!”
Their conversation went on and I just smiled as I listened to their detailed descriptions of each character while my son decided on who he wanted to be. Robin, of course, was taken, along with Little John, so the options included the Will Scarlet, Arthur a Bland, Much, and a couple others. They finally decide on who was going to be which character and then I hear my son say, “well, I know my bow and arrow is cool even though it’s made of spoons but guess what? One of my big brothers can actually shoot a real one! And he learned it at school!”
He is right! If you don’t already know, archery has been a part of SLOCA‘s Friday Academy Clubs program now for the past several years (currently in its 4th year!). As our students immerse themselves in the adventures of Robin Hood in class, it is such a delight to have our very own resource to help bring this to life, outside of their classrooms, right on SLOCA grounds.
“Mr. Rich Bartel can be found living the SLOCA mission on the archery field: forging character, sharing his knowledge and passion for archery, and building the community of SLO county archers.”
Having archery as one of the club options for our students has produced some very talented archers. Just this past November, 5 of our students participated in the 4th Annual Thanksgiving Day Shoot and all 5 of them got medals!
Wyatt Stapp – 1st
David Walz – 1st
Henry Bartel – 2nd
Piper Banys – 2nd
Asher Greenberg – 3rd
Wyatt and David shot for Central Coast Archery, while Henry, Piper, and Asher shot for SLOCA.
Way to go, Grizzlies!!! We’re so proud of you. And thank you, Mr. Bartel, for your steadfast guidance and intentional investment in our students.
We have more to come in the world of Archery so stay tuned as you hear straight from Mr. Rich Bartel himself! In the meantime, please mark your calendars as our next event is scheduled for March 9th on the Talley Farms Athletic Field. You can email Rich directly if you would like more information!

Thank you for this. I just love the conversation in the car between the boys, and the connection to archery!
Thanks, Kary! I agree with you. So rad that we have such a great local resource!!
