Happy Friday, everyone! We’re back with our Sponsor Spotlight series and joining us today is Lindamood-Bell’s center director, Elly Boehm. Lindamood-Bell, who has been tremendous in supporting SLOCA through our Sponsorship program, grew from a small Learning Center right here in SLO to now, “an organization with over 60 Learning Centers and dozens of seasonal Learning Camps.” They are a business that’s dedicated and committed to education.
Our supporters are an integral part of our community and we wanted our readers to get to know them. And what better way to learn more about our supporters than right here on our blog! Let’s hear more from Elly…
Tell us about Lindamood-Bell
Patricia Lindamood, a speech pathologist, and Nanci Bell, a reading specialist, started Lindamood-Bell in 1986.
How long have you been a part of Lindamood-Bell?
I have had the pleasure of working with Lindamood-Bell over the past few years in our Southern California centers, but am delighted to be back in my hometown of San Luis Obispo as the Center Director here! I have been enjoying my new role for nearly 5 months now, and am so excited to continue my journey as a part of this community.
Who is your target audience?
We work with students of all ages, from 5 years old through adulthood! One of the most special and favorite aspects of my job is getting to work with so many different types of students, and help each of them reach their full potential, no matter their age or background.
What about this organization drew you in?
I am so passionate about the very real and tangible difference we make in students and families lives. I began paving my career path when I attended Cal Poly where I studied Microbiology with my sights set on medical school and medical research- I wanted to help people! My role with Lindamood-Bell allows me to interact with and impact the lives of so many in a truly life changing and meaningful way.
What makes Lindamood-Bell stand out?
Lindamood-Bell focuses on underlying sensory cognitive processes in order to impact reading and reading comprehension. We are an intensive remediation program that can be completed while a student is enrolled in school, and we also are a K-12 Private School. This allows us to enroll students in our school Lindamood-Bell Academy, and provide sensory-cognitive remediation while applying those skills to curriculum in an environment that fosters positivity and provides students the opportunity to reach their full potential.
One of my favorite parts of my career is knowing that I get to spend my days fostering a positive and lasting change in the lives of so many families. Lindamood-Bell is a place where students and families of all ages receive life changing instruction in a supportive and positive environment. We also are involved in the forefront of educational research, which is incredibly important and meaningful.
What is the most important benefit you deliver?
Development of underlying sensory-cognitive processing. With daily instruction, we have the ability to impact the way a student perceives sounds, images symbols and words, and pictures dynamic imagery, which are the underlying skills required in order to read, comprehend, and do math.
Seeing our children achieve their fullest potential and teaching beyond just technique is the heart of a true educator. Thank you so much for sharing about you and your organization, Elly, and we are grateful for your support of SLOCA!
