Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Our Grand Grands

We have a short but super sweet WONDER post to share with you today. A few months ago, I (Cheryl) had the wonderful opportunity to sit down and chat with one of our SLOCA grandparents and board member, Sandee Beckers, about the role of grandparents at SLOCA.

Sandee is passionate about seeing grandparents involve in their children and grandchildren’s lives as they go through their SLOCA journey. Throughout our meeting, we kept going back to the point that to raise the precious children entrusted to us, sometimes it takes a village. While some of us have the benefit of having our parents nearby, some of us do not. Some live on a different continent! This makes it all the more important to invite those who can to be a part of this homeschooling journey.

I walked away from our meeting refreshed and inspired knowing we have a lot of grandparents in our school community who understand that their jobs aren’t done and that they still have so much more to offer. Their perspective, with their age and life experience, is something we should not take for granted and something we really should be around more.

Well, today’s WONDER post highlights the connection we’re talking about. One of the grandparents in Sandee’s group emailed her about this story. We’ll let Tóta tell you about it…

When my grandson Elliott. a six-year-old, kindergartner, who attends SLOCA, visits me, I always play classical music in the background. The other day we were playing quietly and he looked up at me and said: “Tóta, is that Pachelbel’s Canon in D?”  I asked him where he had heard it and he said he learned about it in school.

Sweet!!

Wasn’t that a sweet story? We loved how she addressed her email too. Tóta (or Grandma Judy) was clearly elated to have that connecting moment with her grandson.

We hope this post inspires you to continue finding those moments with your loved ones. Whether your student can visit their grandparent in person or through video chat, or perhaps hanging out with someone else’s grandparent! There is something beautiful (and incredibly valuable) when generations are brought together.

We hope to hear more stories from our grandparents! Email us if you have one to share!!
