Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

The Character Issue

This month the character trait we will be highlighting is Citizenship. When I (Cheryl) hear this word, I think about a moment a couple of decades ago when I stood in a large room with other foreign citizens, holding our small American flag in hand, taking our oath of allegiance to the United States of America. Being granted citizenship to this amazing country is one of my most memorable moments so far and a privilege I do not take for granted.

Beyond patriotism and obeying laws, citizenship is also about cooperating with others, being a good neighbor, respecting authority, and taking care of the environment. It is about getting involved and doing our part to make our community better. Whether it’s in our homes, for our country or our planet, everyone counts.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” -Margaret Mead, American anthropologist (1901-1978)

Our upcoming Heroic Quest is the perfect opportunity to model this month’s character trait. SLOCA’s definition of Citizenship is:

“Recognizing one’s place in the greater communities (family, school, local and country) through active service and respectful devotion to the community’s members, values and standards. Catch phrase: Everyone counts.”

We are looking forward to seeing the small acts of heroism your students discover and act upon for our quest! If they already have ideas on what they will be doing, we’d love for you to share them on the comments below!

Thanks for joining us as we make San Luis Obispo County a better place!
