Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Dinner Parties w/a Purpose

Joining us again today is Sandee Beckers, one of our SLOCA grandparents and board member with her take on this year’s Parties with a Purpose. If you’re new to SLOCA or haven’t heard yet what these dinner parties are all about, make sure to read a little bit about them here. Parties with a Purpose’s goal is:

“Meeting new people, reconnecting with old friends and basking in the warmth of elevated conversation. Fine wine and delectable comestibles are just a few of the benefits when sharing a meal together.”

Let’s read more about our last dinner…

Chef David Stoothoff, of Madeline’s Restaurant in Cambria, presented a delicious array of six sophisticated courses, paired with wines from his restaurant’s wine cellar, to the delight of fourteen SLOCA supporters on May 4th, at Bill and Sandee Beckers’ home in SLO. It was a wonderful experience for  SLOCA parents, SLOCA Grandparents, and a few people who came for the food, wine and to find out a little about the SLOCA community.

Here are a few descriptions of the evening:

“Ted and I love going to these dinners.  Not only is it an evening filled with lots of laughter and fantastic food, but it also provides us the opportunity to meet members of the SLOCA community that we may not encounter otherwise.”  Carie Stanton, SLOCA Parent

“It was so nice to come together with others that have been blessed with the world of SLOCA.   Besides the amazing food, it was clear that this group shared a common thread of excellence that in some way brought our respective families in touch with this wonderful school.”  Collete Came, SLOCA Grandparent

“The food was absolutely wonderful and the wine pairing was right on with each course.” Cindy Jones, SLOCA Grandparent

“I really enjoyed the time that the chef spent with us describing the meal and why he chose the ingredients that were used. The food was great and the wine pairings were fantastic. He had a great knowledge of both to share with us. I also really enjoyed taking the time to sit down and get to know more SLOCA families. It’s a special time to spend.” -Andria McGhee, SLOCA Parent

We encourage everyone to look for Dinner With a Purpose opportunity when they come up next. It is a memorable evening and a great way to support this incredible school.

To round out this year’s Restaurant Series, our last party is coming up on Sunday, June 2nd with Josh Christensen of Sidecar. Tickets are now available! We hope to see you there!!

  1. Chef David, as well as being great at what he does, is also a SLOCA parent. An evening in Cambria at his restaurant is always special.
