Happy Friday, everyone! And Happy Memorial Day weekend!
A quick history for you…
Many people think of Memorial Day as just a holiday–a long weekend, a holiday from work and school, time to BBQ or go camping. Did you know Memorial Day was formerly Decoration Day and began after the Civil War to commemorate fallen soldiers? Since we have are off this coming Monday and Tuesday, this would be a great time to educate our children on the history of Memorial Day. We thought we’d use today’s Fill-Me-In Friday to give you a couple of resources you can use this coming week to honor this profound event:
- Visit the SLO Veterans Museum in the Veterans Memorial Building located at 801 Grand Avenue – just down the street from our school.
- Here’s an online scavenger hunt that helps kids learn about the history of Memorial Day
- Sing a patriotic song or teach younger children the tune and lyrics to Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful
- Prepare a red, white and blue parfait snack with your kids
- Here’s another great resource in other ways you can celebrate and honor this special day with your students.
Remember those who have given their lives in service to our nation, and cherish your family and friends during this short break from the usual school schedule.
Have a beautiful weekend!
