San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

The Last Week of Summer

The sweet and simple days of summer are all too quickly slipping way. Can you believe we only have two more Fridays left before the start of school? And that is counting today! As we head into the weekend and then the final week before the start of school, we want to make sure you are thoroughly informed about some upcoming SLOCA events.

Tomorrow:

Saturday, August 17th 8:30-2:30 All School Work Day and Meet Your Teacher

Whether you are new to SLOCA or a veteran family, the All School Work Day is an excellent opportunity to meet new people and reconnect with those you haven’t seen all summer. This is a kid-friendly event, so bring them along and let’s work together to get our campus ready for the start of school. There will be a pizza lunch and an opportunity to meet your child(ren)’s teacher(s). Come get a jump start on your volunteer hours. It is not too late to sign up and let us know you will be there.

The Week Before School:

There are quite a few events we want to make sure you have on your calendar for the week before school.

  • New to SLOCA students coming into 6th, 7th, and 8th grades are required to attend the Intensive Week. For 6th graders, they are required to attend Latin Intensive, Monday (8/19) and Tuesday (8/20) from 9am-12pm. For 7th and 8th graders, they are required to attend Latin and Writing Intensive, Monday – Thursday (8/19-8/22) from 9am-3pm. These intensive classes are also open to returning SLOCA students if they would like a refresher. Just email Amy at [email protected].
  • Thursday, August 22nd-Parent Orientation 6:30-8:30 at Grace Church in San Luis Obispo. This is a meeting not to be missed. Come be inspired and encouraged as our leaders share with us their vision for the upcoming school year (and a lot more essential information). PLEASE––allow plenty of time to find parking as this meeting takes place downtown on a Thursday night during Farmers’ Market.

On the first days of school, August 26th & 27th, there will be a New Families coffee and scones social. Swing by the lo-fi lounge at 8:30 am (the lo-fi lounge is located just past the office front desk––ask the NOL (Nice Office Lady) if you are not sure where to go and she will direct you). Bring your devices (laptops and/or ipads), so you can make sure you’re signed in and ready to take on the new year. Don’t miss this opportunity to connect with other SLOCA families and staff, walk through what you need to know to be successful at SLOCA, and ask questions. Plus there will be a little something special waiting for you, too.

There are still a few openings left for the 2019/2020 school year. It’s not too late for families to enroll! If you know of someone interested in joining us, email [email protected].
