In 1492…
Can you think of that date and not hear the rest of the rhyme in your head? (“Columbus sailed the ocean blue.”) I (Sharon) can’t. Thirty-some years ago when I learned about Christopher Columbus in school, I remember reciting this rhyme, memorizing the names of his ships, and being taught that he “discovered” America, and not much else. Today, as we strive to educate our children they are hopefully learning more than I did about this complicated historical figure and his impact on the world.
For this week’s Monday Mix-ins, I endeavored to compile for you resources that are both age-appropriate and balanced. Use them as a jumping-off point for more in-depth discussions with your students.
