Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magellan and Vespucci

Hello, Down Home readers and welcome to the start of another week.

Let’s be honest, sometimes homeschool days can be hard. And if we are really honest, there are days when the word “hard” is not an adequate adjective. After a particularly challenging homeschool day last week I (Sharon) spent some time reflecting on how I could have approached it better. What could I have done to stop the “snowball effect” (as I call it) from spiraling our home day into an emotional wreck? What we really needed was a distraction, something to get us out of our funk. I was reminded of the power of laughter, (oh how we could have used some laughter that day) and how a little bit of humor really can defuse a stressful situation.

So to start off our Monday Mix-ins this week I am arming you with some laughter. It has no educational value, (however, being SLOCA families, I’m sure you could find something academic to take away from it) it is simply a video of cats being silly. If you find your homeschool day taking a wrong turn, maybe pull up this video (or tell a joke or anything else to tickle the old funny bone) and see if a little laughter can’t help you get back on track.

We also have lots of fabulous resources for you on two significant explorers, Magellan and Vespucci.  Check them out!
