Connecting with those in our community these days definitely has its obstacles. However, just because we are sheltering in place does not mean we should resign to becoming curmudgeonly hermits. With a little bit of creativity, we can find ways to demonstrate kindness and care. It’s worth it! Over the last two weeks, our SLOCA leadership and staff have been encouraging us to find ways to show creative kindness in our community. Take a look at how a few SLOCA families have been implementing this idea.
The wonderful thing about kindness is that it often does not have to be complicated or time-consuming. Little things like notes on rocks or a simple smile when passing someone by on a walk are easy to do and convey to those around us that we are all in this together.
More Ideas for Creative Kindness & Citizenship:
- Go Outside and Howl at 8 p.m. (This is a real thing–check it out!)
- Decorate your driveway and sidewalks with chalk. Make colorful pictures, write encouraging words or even fun jokes for those out walking to read and enjoy.
- Participate in a Bear Hunt. Put a bear in your window for local kids to find.
- Make a treat for your neighbors. Here’s a link to some treat recipes that require minimal ingredients.
- Offer to do a neighbor’s yard work: pull weeds, mow the lawn or trim bushes, etc.
- Make posters or notes for your postal workers, utility people and waste management workers.
- Deliver flowers — many local flower growers are struggling. This is a win-win in that you can support the local growers and brighten someone’s day.
- TP and/or egg someone’s house the COVID way. Leave toilet paper and eggs on a neighbor’s doorstep. Chances are they need them.
- Bring gloves and trash bags on your next family hike or walk and pick up trash along the way. Or make a specific trek to a litter-prone area.
- Record your child reading a picture book and send it to grandparents, neighbors or other friends that would enjoy it.
- Order food from a local restaurant or purchase a gift card to use later to support local businesses.
- Send a text message, email or call a friend you haven’t connected with in a while.
Share with us your ideas and photos of ways that you are demonstrating creative kindness.
Let’s keep cheering each other on!
