Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Something New By Bill D. & Our Survey Winner!

It’s Friday and here’s hoping the weekend will be cooler than the week. As promised we will be announcing the winner of our Down Home blog survey today. A HUGE thank you to all of you that submitted feedback. Your considerate comments will help us to tailor the blog to offer content relevant to you and your SLOCA journey.

Before we announce the winner, we wanted to tell you about something else exciting. If you are looking for another book to add to your bedside stack, we have a suggestion for you! Check out this quick blurb by our SLOCA Delvopment Assistant, Shannon DalPorto.

We’re bringing back a familiar face! You attended SLOCA’s Speaker Series with Bill Deresiewicz in March 2019, and he just released a new project. If you enjoyed his book, Excellent Sheep, you’re sure to enjoy this.

Professor Deresiewicz’s new book, Death of an Artist, is available now! This book focuses on how artists (musicians, writers, visual artists, makers of film and television) are making it (or are they?) in the twenty-first century. As technology becomes more accessible, so does creativity. Anyone can snap a photo, record a video, or record a song with the touch of a button. Anyone can be an artist, right?

Not necessarily, Deresiewicz argues. We all have heard of the “starving artist” trope, and Deresiewicz argues that this is truer now more than ever.

Our culture values efficiency, which is why we invented fast food. Recently, “fast fashion” has emerged in the headlines. Now, we have “fast art.” What does this mean for artists?

You’ll have to read Death of an Artist to learn more.  (Click the link for more info.)

Have no idea who Bill D. is or what we are talking about? Check out this Down Home recap of the Bill D. event.
