Happy Friday! As we ease into a much needed Thanksgiving Break we would like to remind you of a couple of things. We have our Thanksgiving packet in our Parent Portal under Holiday Resources. The Den will also be open till late on December 7th for History Training, so drop by, or pre-order for pick up, your Trimester 2 books and your gifts for the holidays..
Dear Readers, I (Wei) am going to let you in on a little secret. As I am new to the Down Home Blog I was dreaming of an amazing gift guide round up for the holidays this year. A gift guide to end all gift guides! Impeccably sourced and extravagantly collated. But alas, as we are still being affected by the ongoing monkey wrench called COVID and today I am here to advocate thinking a little differently, and a little more intentionally, about gifts this year.
First up, a plea to shop local this year. We’ve all seen our local businesses close up over the past year, and this November SLO City is offering a Buy Local bonus for $100 gift cards purchased from local retailers, restaurants or other food & beverage businesses in the City of San Luis Obispo. If you email in your receipts you may be eligible for a $25 gift card to another local business! While there are limited gift cards available, I thought this was a great way to support our local economy, even if you don’t get the receipts emailed over in time.
Secondly, what about a handmade gift or craft? Down Home has some amazing ideas in our archives, and I have often thought that the gift of crafting materials, and the time to sit down and do it with a loved one, is extra special.

I also came across this NY Times article about a stocking stuffer swap, which I wish I knew about when I had littles!
Finally, shop local at your local, The Den! SLOCA gear has come in this week (!) and we have all of the sizes from kids to adults to try on. While you are there don’t forget that we have lots of Grizzly and SLOCA themed pendants and water bottles, a must now that Athletics is back up and running! We also have our Must Reads books for all ages and some of them are available in those beautifully bound covers.
I hope that this gave you a couple of ideas as we go into Thanksgiving Break. See you when we return!
