Dear Down Home readers! We apologize for the delay on this post, our domain had some issues over the weekend and we are only able to post this today. We hope that you are able to take this Tuesday to look over these resources with your family.
Happy Monday, everyone! And Happy Memorial Day weekend! Today we have some resources on two important holidays – Memorial Day and Flag Day. If you are a currently enrolled family, don’t forget our resources in our Parent Portal that have lots of resources on these two important holidays.
A quick history for you on Memorial Day…
Did you know Memorial Day was formerly Decoration Day and began after the Civil War to commemorate fallen soldiers? Today it is a holiday set aside to remember and honor those who died in active military service to our country. Some things you can do today:
- Watch the live broadcast of the National Memorial Day Parade, which is returning to a live audience on Constitution Avenue for the first time since 2019.
- Set aside a moment at 3pm to “voluntarily and informally observe in their own way a moment of remembrance and respect, pausing from whatever they are doing for a moment of silence or listening to Taps.”
- Take an online scavenger hunt that helps kids learn about the history of Memorial Day.
- Sing a patriotic song or teach younger children the tune and lyrics to Star Spangled Banner or America the Beautiful.
- Prepare a red, white and blue parfait snack with your kids.
- Here’s another great resource in other ways you can celebrate and honor this special day with your students.
And of course we’ve provided a selection of books, movies, and links that relate to this holiday.

However you honor and celebrate this holiday – most likely with friends, family, barbecues, and enjoying the outdoors – we hope you’ll take a moment of silent reflection at 3 pm to remember those who have fallen defending our country. And cherish those who are near and dear to you, and the freedoms we all enjoy!
