San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Friday Faces 2014: Lead Team, Board of Directors, and a Few More

We are wrapping up our Friday Faces series today, with just a couple more new staff members to introduce you to. Below them are links to last year’s Lead Team, Board of Directors, and a few more people who make SLOCA the special place that it is. Click on those links to see their answers from last year:

Katie Morales

Administrative Assistant to the Executive Director

Q: What is your degree in?

A: My degree is in Anthropology and I graduated from BIOLA University in 2007.  I also went through BIOLA's Great Books program – the Torrey Honors Institute, so I LOVE Classical Education smile

Q: What was your last job before your SLOCA life?

A: My last job was Executive Assistant to the CEO of a non-profit senior living community in Portland, OR.

Q: What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

A: The first thing that I do when I wake up in the morning is blow my nose because I have rediscovered allergies here on the Central Coast!

Q: What is your favorite local restaurant?

A: My favorite local restaurant is Splash Cafe in Pismo because I love those little divey restaurants that have such good food that you have to wait in line for hours just to get your order in – it makes me feel like I'm back in Portland.

Q: What was your favorite book when you were a child?

A: As a child (and to this day) I loved all things Dr. Seuss.  I used to fill my arms with every single Dr. Seuss book available on the Chowchilla Library shelves and the Librarian began to limit me to a certain number because none of the other kids in town would have the opportunity to read Dr. Seuss if I took them all!

Q: What is your favorite piece of literature?

A: My current favorite piece of literature is C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy (Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength).  I read them for the first time this summer and am anxious for the opportunity to read them again – this time I'll read them out loud at home!

Tiffany Ratliff

Events and Volunteer Coordinator

Q: What is your degree in?

A:  I have two associate degrees from Cuesta – A.A. in Hospitality &  A.A. in General Studies.

Q: What was your last job before your SLOCA life?

A: I am also the service coordinator for Crush Catering out of Paso Robles and I work for the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

Q: What is the first thing you do when you wake up in the morning?

A: First thing I do when I wake up is make some strong coffee!

Q: What is your favorite local restaurant?

A: My favorite local restaurant is Goshi's, right across from the children's museum.

Q: What was your favorite book when you were a child?

A: Hmmmmm… I loved The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Goodnight Moon, The Stinky Cheese Man, and of course Love You Forever.

Q: What is your favorite piece of literature?

A:  I enjoyed The Read Aloud Handbook. It was really informative and I told my best friend about the book. She just had her first baby so hopefully she will read read read to her little one!!
