Spring is in full swing, and the weekend is just around the corner. Aren’t you thankful? Whatever plans you may have for the next couple of days, we hope you’ll try to be “Free by Five” at some point this weekend, enjoying some family closeness and interaction away from social media and electronics.
One of the best things about living on the Central Coast is the abundance of fresh produce available. (Especially the strawberries…) Are you a Farmers' Market shopper? There are several in our area, enough for at least one every day of the week! Here’s a schedule of all the Farmers’ Markets in SLO county if you’re curious. Have fun exploring and eating those fresh local fruits and veggies!
A few other options for this weekend:
- Morro Bay Kite Festival – Saturday and Sunday, April 26-27
- Paso Robles Vintage Sidecar Rendezvous, Recycled Treasures & Antique Motorcycles – Saturday, April 26, 9am-3pm
- San Luis Obispo Earth Day Fair – Sunday, April 27, 10am-5pm
We will send you off with another poem, this one inspired by thoughts of farmers, vegetables, and those fortunate enough to grow their own!
Vegetables
by Eleanor Farjeon
The country vegetables scorn
To lie about in shops,
They stand upright as they were born
In neatly-patterned crops;
And when you want your dinner you
Don't buy it from a shelf,
You find a lettuce fresh with dew
And pull it for yourself;
You pick an apronful of peas
And shell them on the spot.
You cut a cabbage, if you please,
To pop into the pot.
The folk who their potatoes buy
From sacks before they sup,
Miss half of the potato's joy,
And that's to dig it up.
