Amy and her gram
According to wikipedia:
Life-long learning is the ongoing, voluntary, and self-motivated pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.
Here at SLO Classical Academy we want to instill a love of learning in our kids, and encourage them (and each other) to be life-long learners, but what does that look like? It’s one thing to talk about it, but so much more powerful to have it modeled. Our very own Amy Calloway shared with us an inspiring family memory that we wanted to pass along:
Amy’s grandmother or “gram,” Norma Northrop, truly was a life-long learner and a lover of history! It’s one of the things Amy will forever remember about her. She was always studying something, and took CD courses on her computer. At age 92, Norma was studying World History, the History of Language, the life and writings of CS Lewis, and the top 20 events that forever changed the world, which was her absolute favorite.
Norma “gram” Northrop
Her house was stuffed full of learning. Bookshelves and tables were covered with books, newspapers, and stacks of magazines such as National Geographic, as well as archaeology, architecture, etc. She read through them over and over. The last time Amy visited, her gram gave her a stack of very old newspapers – some dating back hundreds of years.
Amy's gram loved antiques and what they meant in history! In her office, Amy has a letter box that belonged to her gram, and it is one of her most treasured mementos. It was Norma's first antique that she bought back in the early 50s. She used to keep special letters in it, and now Amy keeps all the special notes and cards she receives from students, parents, and staff in it.

Don’t you just love it? Talk about educating for life! What an inspiration gram was to Amy, and now to our SLOCA community. Thanks for sharing, Amy!
Do you know an authentic life-long learner and want to share their story on the blog? We would love to hear it! Email Down Home to tell us about it.
