Today we have a Magical Moment to share with you, written by Cozy Faber, our Development Director and mom to Ava and Sia on Track B (both LMS):
On Thursday October 10th 15 student volunteers from SLOCA participated in a community service opportunity at Mission View Health Center in San Luis Obispo. It was a warm day sandwiched in between a few which had brought rain and wind so Sally Payne, the activities director, took advantage and welcomed us all out to the atrium.
As the staff wheeled the residents out to greet us, the kids warmed up with a few minutes of Frisbee and then moved into a game of baseball—Yes! Baseball. A resident was assigned to cover each base along with a SLOCA helper who would retrieve balls for them as needed. Several of the boys rotated through pitching a red foam ball to those at bat while the rest took to the outfield. As each resident rolled up to take a swing, they were assigned a “runner” who would push their wheelchair around the bases. (The kids especially liked this task!) After the hit, all kids would do 10 jumping jacks to give the runner time to wheel her resident to first base, or second or third—there were a few home runs!
After an hour of running and cheering and general frivolity, every resident and every student had taken a turn at bat, had laughed pretty heartily and made a new connection. It was one of those moments that slow time down—where one realizes how important the little efforts made in life can make a truly grand difference.
