Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Character is higher than intellect. A great soul will be strong to live as well as think.

~ Ralph Waldo Emerson

Here at SLOCA we believe that character development is essential to a quality education. Periodically we hope to inspire you to keep our monthly character trait in your thoughts, and in your family discussions, as we all strive to grow in quality character. This year we are taking a simpler approach on the blog and will focus on great quotes and photos that are related to the character trait. We encourage you to discuss these quotes with your family if you wish, talk about examples of the character traits you find in our literature and history readings, and look for opportunities to practice them in daily life – after all, modeling these character traits as parents is the best way to teach them to our children.

The character trait for September is Citizenship

Recognizing one’s place in the greater communities (family, school, local and country) through active service and respectful devotion to the community’s members, values, and standards.

What do I owe to my times, to my country, to my neighbors, to my friends? Such are the questions which a virtuous man ought often to ask himself.

~ Johann Kaspar Lavater, German poet (1741-1801)

We can really respect a man only if he doesn’t always look out for himself.

~ Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, German playwright, poet, novelist (1749-1832)

Our children demonstrated citizenship during Work Day.

Hey everyone, tomorrow we begin our Friday Faces series, and here’s a teaser – which NOL do you think has a degree in Philosophy? Make a guess in the comments below, and we’ll see who’s right! Check back tomorrow to find out…
