Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Semper discentes—always learning together.

Summer Movies

We’re almost there, folks! Today Tim Theule is our guest blogger with a great idea for summer. Tim and Susie have, of course, been with the school from the very beginning, and this seasoned SLOCA dad is “all in,” with some encouraging words and recommendations. Thank you, Tim!

Looking to stoke your mojo this summer?    SLOCA is a “full contact sport” and you no doubt feel exhausted at the end of another grueling, yet satisfying school year.   What are you going to do this summer to ensure you are ready to go again come fall?

How about watching an education-focused flick?  Here are a few of my favorites. . . .

Gifted Hands:  The Ben Carson Story (2009):  This is inspiring  story of Ben Carson, head of pediatric neurosurgery and the first to ever separate siamese twins joined at the head.  I made my kids watch this one because it highlights of power of reading.  Currently available on Netflix.

Akeelah & the Bee (2006) :  Akeelah is an gifted African-Amerian girl who stumbles into a spelling bee.   I like this movie because it reminds me of the importance of learning styles and the power of caring teachers.   This one is great for kids of all ages.

Finding Forester (2000):   This is about a teenage boy who discovers a famous, but reclusive, writer living in the apartment high above his neighborhood basketball court.   The writer teaches the boy to write.  The boy teaches the writer how to live again.  The teacher is played by Sean Connery, so you know its got to be good!   Good for upper middle students and older.

Dead Poet's Society (1995):  Remember Robin Williams in this one?  He's a fresh teacher in a new school teaching a group of boys the wonders of literature and poetry.  Carpe Diem!

Mr. Holland's Opus 1995):  Its been a while since I've seen this, but I remember how Mr. Holland, a reluctant teacher, finds himself as he gives himself to his students.   This is the challenge for all us SLOCA parents!

All of these are inspiring and challenging for me and help me remember why we do what we do at SLOCA.  Watch one or two or all five this summer.   And maybe you've got your own favorite education movies.   If so please share them in a comment.
