Memorial Day, originally known as Decoration Day, began three years after the end of the Civil War, as our nation was recovering from that long and devastating era that we have so recently studied with our children. It was intended to commemorate the Union and Confederate soldiers who died, by decorating their graves with flowers. The first observance was held that year at Arlington National Cemetery, across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C.
You can read more about Memorial Day here. Talk with your children about the history of this holiday, so they know it’s more than just a long weekend and a reason to BBQ. If you want to do more, here are some ideas for honoring Memorial Day with kids:
- Visit the SLO Veterans Museum in the Veterans Memorial Building located at 801 Grand Avenue – just down the street from our school. Click here to go to their website for hours and more info.
- Here’s an online scavenger hunt that helps kids learn about the history of Memorial Day.
- If you have a child who is interested in medals of honor, you can print a Medal of Honor coloring book and learn the history behind our brave Soldiers.
- If you like to bake with your kids, here’s a recipe for Election Cake, “an historic Connecticut specialty served on days of civic obligation such as Election Day or militia training in May or September when there would be a lot of socializing.”
Remember those who have given their lives in service to our nation, and cherish your family and friends during this short break from the usual school schedule.
