Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Magical Moments: Roxaboxen

{photo by Rachel Moman}

Welcome back to school! We hope your time away was restful and enjoyable, and that you’re ready to resume our journey…

Today’s Magical Moment is a fun look at a field trip the Track A Kindergarten class took a couple of weeks ago. The class had just read the book Roxaboxen by Alice McLerran, which is a wonderful (and true) story about the imagination of children and their ability to create a whole world out of what they find around them.

To celebrate the imagination of our kinder kids, teacher Mary Knudson invited the class to Atascadero to play at the Salinas riverbed, where the morning was filled with child-led fun and exploration. The outing ended with a picnic back at Mrs. Knudson’s house. Several parents took photos (of course!) and all agreed it was a magical morning. We don’t need the latest, greatest toys and gadgets to keep kids busy, active, and learning through play. Thank you Mary, for giving our kids this special day to connect with their literature and each other!
