It’s Friday! How was your first week back? We’ve all had a week of adjustment as we get back into school and homeschool routines. Maybe it’s been rough to go to bed (and get up) earlier, or to remember to pack lunches, or to wrap your head around the Invention Convention project… we are certainly in the middle of an exciting and busy trimester! If this week didn’t live up to your expectations, it’s okay. Let it go and let’s move forward together.
We want to share something new and fun with you today, created by our very own SLO Classical Academy High School students. It’s the Hanging Lantern Review: a student-led online literary arts/culture blog, created for the discussion of books, movies, short stories, poetry, works of art, and photography. They are currently hosting a writing contest as well. Anyone in grades 7-12 living on the Central Coast can submit poems, essays or short stories to be judged by published authors.
Here’s an excerpt from Caroline Rein, Editor:
“Why a literary journal for high school students? At sloCAHS, we believe in the benefits of reading and writing literature. As students, we have and are continuing to develop a passion for learning. Whether it be Edgar Allen Poe, Tolstoy, Mark Twain, Harper Lee, or Charles Dickens, we believe there are many things gained from reading the work of great writers. When we read great works, they influence us. But they also inspire us to write, and to contribute to the greater conversation going on in the world around us. Writing poetry and short stories not only sparks our creativity, but also increases our appreciation for other works. Writing benefits us by challenging our brains and our creativity, and a literary journal gives us the perfect outlet for our ideas, thoughts, questions, and creations.”
