Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Friday Faces: Leadership

Team SLOCA

Happy Friday everyone! We are now at the end of our Friday Faces series. Today we bring you our remarkable leaders who serve our school in innumerable ways!

This exceptional group has adopted and is embodying the Core Values that are fundamental to SLOCA and its community. They are dedicated for the long haul (All In), they are focused and thoughtful (Always Mindful), they are fixated on educating for life (Always Learning), and they are committed to this less-traveled and counter-cultural road (Offbeat) we call SLOCA.

Come and read all about them!

along with Kateri Rein | High School Director

1. You have your own late night talk show, who do you invite as your first guest?

  • Susie: Someone alive?? I’ve had a hankering for a few years to sit down with Patricia Polacco. She writes such beautiful stories, I think she’d be pretty fascinating to meet.  But, if I could choose someone dead, I would probably choose Flannery O’Connor.
  • Michael: Joe Biden
  • Thaddeus: John Baker
  • Betsi: Mary Roach
  • Amy: Jimmy Fallon. Though I would love to have my son on there and hear about his first experiences at college.
  • Merideth: I really have no idea. Most of the people I would choose are dead and if they were alive they probably wouldn’t want to be on a talk show any more than I would. BUT, if I had to choose it would be someone who could make me laugh like, Tina Fey.
  • Cozy: Michelle Obama
  • Jennifer: Lin Manuel Miranda
  • Rachelle: Jim Gaffigan
  • Kateri: This is a job I would never have, but if I am going to sit and gab with someone, I prefer people I know who make me laugh.

2. What is your favorite item you’ve bought this year?

  • Susie: Two tickets to Mexico for our 25th anniversary!
  • Michael: A bike for Ellie
  • Thaddeus: Little Buddy 2009 scooter
  • Betsi: new backpacking backpack
  • Amy: My son’s college education.
  • Merideth: paddleboard
  • Cozy: I got a new purse that I love
  • Jennifer: plane tickets to London
  • Rachelle: A water table for my son.
  • Kateri: Plane tickets for my college children to come home at the holidays.

3. Teleportation or flying?

  • Susie: Flying for sure.
  • Michael: Teleportation
  • Thaddeus: Teleportation
  • Betsi: Flying, I prefer the scenic route
  • Amy: Teleportation for sure!
  • Merideth: Teleportation
  • Cozy: Flying
  • Jennifer: flying
  • Rachelle: Teleportation (I’m afraid of heights!)
  • Kateri: I don’t like to fly in airplanes, but maybe if I am flying around like a fairy, I would enjoy it.

4. What’s the weirdest food you’ve ever eaten?

  • Susie: Liverwurst. I actually really liked it as a kid. Weird, huh?
  • Michael: Sea urchin eggs (from a CA tidepool)
  • Thaddeus: Donkey teeth
  • Betsi: Bee larvae (not delicious)
  • Amy: Not too exciting – alligator and snails.
  • Merideth: Eel
  • Cozy: I am not very adventurous– quail, maybe.
  • Jennifer: sheep brain curry (not my favorite (we’re usually vegetarian), but we were guests in India)
  • Rachelle: Kangaroo
  • Kateri: As a child, Oma (my grandmother) decided to feed my brother and me sweetbread. We were extremely disappointed to find out this was neither sweet nor bread, but weird gray scrambled eggs. It turns out sweetbread is a fancy name for calf brains. Bleh.

5. Would you rather lose all your money or all of your pictures?

  • Susie: Hm. I guess all of my money, but that’s not very practical when it comes to supporting children, paying for college, etc. I do have a few years of that left! I suppose that most of us love photos so much because they help us remember, and perhaps there are other ways of remembering, or maybe it’s more important to stay in the present and remember better because we were so engaged in the moments – they say that some people are so concerned about capturing photos that they actually miss the experience. That’s unfortunate! So maybe my pictures, at least until my kids are grown, with a focus on staying present.
  • Michael: All my money (since my photos are worth more than “all my” seventeen dollars).
  • Thaddeus: Pictures
  • Betsi: the minimalist in me says pictures, but the romantic in me is louder: money.
  • Amy: My pictures.  While I take a ton of pics with my phone I never do anything with them.
  • Merideth: Money
  • Cozy: This will seem shallow, I suppose, but money.  No money means no food or shelter and I’ll cease to exist.  If the photos are gone, I’ll still have the memories. Plus I record a lot through writing, so I’d still have that:)
  • Jennifer: lose all my money — can’t get those photos of my babies and travels back!
  • Rachelle: Neither! 🙂 1/2 money 1/2 pictures? Ugh if I had to choose for real, money. I just can NOT imagine losing all my baby’s photos! Makes me misty-eyed just thinking about it.
  • Kateri: The practical me is holding on to my money, but the sentimental me is not willing to give up the pictures.

Now wasn’t that fun to read? Who knew we had leaders with such varied palates?? 🙂

We hope this leaves you, our readers, with a little more knowledge on who makes up the personnel here at SLOCA. They are a diverse, lively, brilliant group of people who have committed to giving their very best to the families and students they serve. Thank you for joining us and for reading through this entertaining series!

Have a beautiful weekend!!
