Our winter holiday break may be a distant memory now but this heartwarming story from our Intermediate Teacher Lead, Lisa Ann Dillon, resonates loudly as we celebrate Valentine’s Day tomorrow.
Unless you’ve had a student come through our Intermediate level, you may or may not know about a certain tradition. Every December, for the past several years, our 3rd and 4th graders engage in a uniquely special activity that brings joy to so many needy families right here in our community. As part of our Intermediate student’s holiday party, the classes joyfully come together and tie fleece blankets to take to our local community action agency. These blankets are then distributed to families in need.
Let’s read what Lisa Ann shared…
Below is a picture of my friend Ellie over at Community Action Partnership. For years, she has been distributing our blankets to needy kids in the area. You can see some of the other ladies in the office here too.
When I walk in, they pick up the phone and exuberantly tell Ellie, “The blanket lady is here.” That’s me, The Blanket Lady. I love the title. If only they could see all the faces and hands that go into the making of those blankets.
Ellie works each year to be sure the blankets go to the neediest of little ones. You and I, we are so blessed. A blanket alone would seem a paltry gift to one of our own children. But these kids and the ladies who work in the day care centers where they get distributed, wait for these gems.
This year one of the ladies said, “The toys are important for the kids. But these blankets are something lasting. Whatever toys we distributed last year may be broken by now. But they can have these blankets a long time.”
What a privilege and how humbling it is to serve our community in this small way.
What a privilege, in such a seemingly simple task, it truly is! Thank you so much, Mrs. Dillon, for sharing this inspiring and uplifting story with us!
This story reminds us of this beautiful quote from Helen Keller:
“Alone, we can do so little; together, we can do so much”
Have a wonderful Wednesday, everyone!
