A week from today, our school will come together for this year’s Science Night. As we prepare to celebrate our students and the hard work they’ve put in, we wanted to share what our middle school students have been up to these past few weeks. Sharing with us today is one of our lower middle school teachers, Mrs. Rey, along with photos and videos from Mrs. Wright and Mr. Yorke.
Take a look at what they were up to…
Over the last six weeks, our students have been thrust into the shoes of scientists. Their first challenge was to observe dry ice as if seeing it for the very first time. Students were to make no assumptions and encouraged to wonder why after sharing some simple things they observed. As the weeks went by, they learned first hand as the London Royal Society would say, “Nullius in verba” (loosely translated as “don’t take anybody’s word for it see for yourself”). They were eventually placed into groups of 2-3 to come up with a good investigable question they still have about dry ice and carry out that investigation.
I wish you could have been with us to hear all the “WOWs” and “AHHHHs” during this time. They then came up with even more questions about dry ice after their first investigation was complete and carried out the “follow up” investigation as well. Some students were slightly disappointed that their dry ice didn’t produce this incredible explosion or create another jaw-dropping effect, but they did learn that they still discovered new information and that being a scientist takes time, patience, and perseverance. These experiences, where students are guided to make inquiries such as these, help prepare them to own the process of finding out about the world around them on their own.
