Did you know that SLOCA’s thrift store represents the BEST in SLO County? We visited Fred & Betty’s a few weeks ago to congratulate them on this incredible accomplishment and invited their store manager, Meagan Watts, to join us today to share more.

That’s right, SLOCA’s thrift store was just voted the best thrift store in the county by the New Times! This is a big deal for our little store since Goodwill has won nearly every year for the 30 plus years that New Times has been running its Annual Best of SLO Reader’s Poll. Fred & Betty’s won back in 2017 and we are so thankful to have received the title again. We hope this will help spread the word about our store and that we will see an increase in customers and sales.

Why is Fred & Betty’s the best thrift store in SLO? We pride ourselves in providing excellent customer service and a fun shopping experience for all. Fred and Betty’s is known for having the friendliest staff, an eclectic Instagram account, color coordinated displays, and our $5 clothing bag sale (we provide a bag, customers fill it with clothing and it’s just $5+tax). We are constantly changing up displays and the store layout to keep things fresh and exciting for our customers. Ultimately the credit for the win goes to the friendly, creative, hardworking staff at Fred and Betty’s.

Fred & Betty’s Staff

Fred and Betty’s thrift store opened its doors in the fall of 2013. The store is named after the landlords of the lot, Fred & Betty Campbell. This sweet couple comes in from time to time with donations and it is always fun to introduce them to customers. We are 100% donation based and our proceeds benefit SLOCA. We take anywhere from 10-20 carloads of donations each day we are open. All those items are sorted, priced, and displayed by the staff. Most days we have 3-4 employees working but this is a full-scale operation so we can always use more help. We are open Monday through Saturday 10:00am-5:00pm, however, there is always someone at the store by 9:00am so you are welcome to come by after drop off to complete volunteer hours. No need to call. There is always something to work on and we will never turn down help.
