The Character Issue: Responsibility

Character is kinda a big deal around here. 

“SLO Classical Academy is a community that forges character, fosters wisdom and nurtures a lifelong passion for learning.”

Character is part of the fabric of our school. It is essential. However, it can be tempting to get caught up in the accomplishments of our students, to focus on their successes and grades, and to praise only performance. But as Mr. Rogers reminds us, it is not what our students do that is important but what they are. Are they responsible, respectful, kind, and humble? Do they demonstrate diligence, resilience, and resourcefulness? Do others notice their courage, their integrity, their gratitude? Can they be relied on to be good stewards and citizens? These are the character traits we seek to cultivate at SLOCA.  To “forge” means “to form, with a concentrated effort”. Character does not just happen. We are responsible for nurturing these traits in our students and setting an example as well.  

Each month at Down Home we will highlight the character trait of the month as a reminder to you and your student(s) about what it means, why it is important, and how we can encourage it in each other. 

September: Responsibility

Basing decisions on practical wisdom and good sense, being dependable in carrying out commitments and duties, and being accountable for one’s words, behavior, and actions.

Catch Phrase:

Character in our Community:

Have you seen our new Character in Our Community board? Located in the Lo-Fi Lounge, this big blackboard is a place for us to celebrate when we see students, staff, or parents exemplifying a SLOCA character trait in our community. Write a quick note about what you witnessed and post it on the board or share a video with us at [email protected].

 

At the end of each Character Issue, you will find a link to a pdf featuring this month’s character trait. Feel free to print these and hang them in your homeschool area or somewhere prevalent to act as a visual reminder to you and your family.
