A Day in the Life is a fan-favorite among our Down Home readers and rightfully so. It offers a unique opportunity to see into the homeschool life of another SLOCA family. Today is a special High School Edition. Once SLOCA students reach high school they are often extremely independent in their schooling, so much so that it’s not their parents writing A Day in the Life anymore, but the students themselves. We hope you enjoy this peek into what a typical school day and home day look like for SLOCA high school senior, Luke Rossi.
Monday:
6:30 AM
After a nice, relaxing weekend filled with peace and freedom, I awake on Monday morning to the sound of my alarm clock screaming the Beatles song “Twist and Shout” (actually an Isley Brothers song). Since it wakes me every morning, I’ve grown to hate hearing this song because it makes me think of getting out of bed.
7:30-8:25 AM
My first class of the day is a zero period, Statistics. We just finished taking our final (which I’m still praying I passed) last Wednesday. Dr. Rein always has the most unique ways of explaining things that often interests me more than the material itself.
8:30-9:20 AM
What is first period for everyone else is hang-out time for me. I go down to the library on the main campus and bother my friends while they try to study or refresh myself for an English discussion by re-reading the homework.
9:30-10:45 AM
Part of my duty as a student council representative for Valhalla house (Disembowelment!) is to give the morning announcements on Mondays and Wednesdays. My official title is Minister of Propaganda. I always follow the announcements with my famous joke… “My ex-wife still misses me…but her aim is gettin’ better!”
Since most of my friends take Physics, they are trapped in class while I am free. I usually spend this time running errands or shredding new riffs on my guitar.
10:45-12:00 PM
When everyone is through with Physics we eat lunch together on the main campus or make a mid-day trip to Burger King and sometimes hike to Chic-fil-a.
12:00-1:00 PM
During my actual lunch period, I represent Valhalla house at student council meetings (but only on Mondays). We have just finished/not finished our revisions of the dress code for the high school.
1:00-2:10 PM
History is 4th period for me. This class usually consists of lots of: important information; several hilarious comments; and someone spinning the wheel of Misfortune, thanks to one of the aforementioned hilarious comments.
2:10-2:20 PM
During the ten-minute break, I check to be sure everyone in my house is doing their chore. I also use this time to squeeze in as many high-fives and fist bumps as I possibly can and maybe some more guitar playing.
2:20-3:30 PM
English with Mrs. Kozinski is my final class of the day. This class is both a blessing and a curse because we have Mrs. Kozinski (blessing), but we also have to think for ourselves (curse). It usually turns out to be a very interesting mix of discussion and text that inspires more discussion outside of class. I spent an hour talking with my classmates about the bible after class on Monday.
3:30- PM
The rest of my day is spent however I choose. Some days I will work on homework so I don’t have to do it all on Tuesday. Others I will hang out with friends. Some days I rehearse with my rock band.
Tuesday:
I have a part-time job though I don’t always work on Tuesdays. If I have enough time to work and there is enough work for me to do, I wake up around eight and head in.
11:00 AM
If I don’t have work, I wake up usually around eleven. I do my homework as soon as possible to get it out of the way and save time for revisions later if I need it.
I usually do my classes’ homework in the order that I take the classes at school. I’ll start with Stats which usually takes me about an hour depending on the homework we have that week.
12:00 PM
History is next. This typically takes a bit more time as there’s usually lots of reading and writing, but it’s worth it. Many times, I have found that knowing everything there is to know about the Medici family is beneficial.
1:00 PM
I end with English because this is usually the most reading-heavy homework. That way, if it takes me longer to finish than I expected, I already have the other homework done. Most of the time, I’m done with my homework by three at the latest, although I am only taking three classes this year so…
I spend the rest of my day doing the same things I would do any normal day: hanging out with friends, practicing on my guitar, or running errands in my minivan and pretending it’s a 1970 Dodge Challenger.
For someone as disorganized as myself, I am surprised that I actually get things done. The trick to time management is really just getting the work done and then spending the rest of your time doing whatever you want.
Thank you so much, Luke, for sharing with us a bit of your life.
