Happy Wednesday and welcome to July! Each Wednesday of the summer we will be highlighting one of our amazing, newly graduated SLOCA High School seniors and their senior project. Mr. McCullough did an eloquent job of introducing them in the Bear Necessities, so we thought we’d let his words introduce them here too.
You may have heard that Shakespeare wrote King Lear under quarantine conditions and Newton developed “my Calculus”… But have you heard about the Class of 2020’s Senior Projects? That’s right: forging ahead under shelter-in-place conditions, all eighteen of our seniors [completed] a capstone research project and filmed a short presentation summarizing their work.
If the past has taught us anything, it’s that things change—yet the work of learning and discovery and community continues. It’s a wonderful thing we get to be a part of here at SLOCA, now more than ever.
–Paul McCullough, SLOCA High School English Teacher

Simply Made Croissants: A Cookbook Bringing Croissant Recipes to the Home Kitchen
My project, titled “Simply Made Croissants: a Cookbook Bringing Croissant Recipes to the Home Kitchen,” combines hand-lettering, graphic design, and baking to create an accessible and approachable croissant cookbook for the home baker. Hearing a baker’s story in Rarotonga inspired me to write and design my own cookbook. My goal was to provide a guide of how to master this tough pastry at home without scratching your head over complicated recipes. Learning to tackle the tough things is something I’ve taken away from my time at SLOCA, and it’s something that translated to this project! The final product contains all original photography, typography, recipes, and graphics. Enjoy!

Are you taking pre-orders for your cookbook or perhaps we’ll see it in The Den? 😉
Thanks for highlighting these, Sharon! I can’t wait for next one!
WOO!
Love it! The book is beautiful and it’s such an accomplishment that you are both the food artist and the artistic photographer/writer. Well done!
