Happy Friday! Today on Friday Faces we are featuring the rest of the amazing staff that make up our High School. There are some themes of teleporting and flying today, my apologies (Wei) if it spurs on a sense of wanderlust for your weekend!
If you could have been the author of any novel, which one would it be and why?
Kayna: Pollyanna by Eleanor H Porter. I love this book, especially as a children’s novel. What a great way to teach about the power of gratitude, and how it can have a contagious effect on others!
Adriana: Pride and Prejudice because Jane Austen is both delightfully witty, and a keen observer of human character. She writes with humor, clarity, and precision!
Art: Any Jules Verne novels because Science Fiction is awesome.
Steven: I like this question because it provides me the opportunity to evaluate the lives of the authors and/or the novels themselves. I’ll say Tom Wolfe of “A Man in Full” (one of my favorite books) because his life has been pretty interesting and varied but also because he seems to deepen his understanding of humanity in every book.
Gil: I would like to have written the biography of Malcom X actually. It would be amazing to spend time with him and understand how he transformed himself.
Joe: If I could have been the author of any novel, it would be 1984. It would be satisfying to have turned so many against totalitarianism.
Sara: I think I would have wanted to author Pride and Prejudice. Jane Austen so honestly captures the nuance of humanity. I love that she shows that it is the small subtle actions humans do that really communicate to others who they are.
What was your favorite hobby you picked up during the pandemic and why?
Kayna: If DIY’ing is a hobby (or even a word), that would be my most popular activity during the pandemic. I would say more specifically my hobby was starting a new craft project every month. If anyone wants a half started wood-burning, watercolor, macrame, embroidery, or sewing project let me know, I have many.
Adriana: Does becoming a Survivor super-fan twenty years late count as a hobby? As to why, well, what’s better than watching people pushed to the ultimate edge both physically and mentally triumph against all odds? Plus Jeff Probst is *the* host of all hosts.
Art: Binge watching a few TV shows/movies that I wanted to watch with the kids.
Steven: Travel. With cheaper airfare and with some creativity, I was able to visit more national parks in the last 18 months than in any other 18 month period in my life. Oh, and Egypt too.
Gil: Live streaming my DJ sets with my fiancée (now wife).
Joe: My favorite pandemic hobby was baking, because home baking tastes so good!
Sara: My favorite hobby that I picked up during the pandemic was learning how to make floral arrangements. I have always wanted to learn how to make arrangements, but never had the reason to do so. The pandemic gave me time to cultivate beauty within my home and my wedding that occurred this summer gave me reason to spend money on flowers and learn how to arrange.
If you could have any superpower, what would it be? And why?
Kayna: I would choose the power to pause time but still be able to move about. I think it could come in handy with a lot of things. If I was running late I could pause time and hurry along, or if I ever wanted to take a little nap mid-day I could!
Adriana: Hmm. I would either love to be a muscle mimic, so I could amass a long list of specialized skills, or have the ability to teleport, so traveling could be free and fast!
Art: Teleportation. It would be awesome to go anywhere you like. How about breakfast in Paris, ride all the Ferris wheels, relax in the afternoon in the quietness of the New Zealand countryside, see the sunsets in all the awesome sites in the world all in a single day and then snuggle in your own bed for the night. What a great Saturday.
Steven: My Superhero name is “The Decorbonator” … my superpower would be to remove all the carbon from object or being at will. To be honest, it is sort of creepy, but it would be very effective tool in some super contexts.
Gil: Flying. So I could go everywhere in the world and visit the people I love and friends I made whenever they wanted to hang out.
Joe: If I could have any superpower, it would be flying. I have dreamt of it so many times that it would be a shame not to try it.
Sara: I would like to be able to teleport. It would be so amazing to be able to teleport to India for dinner and then take it to-go and eat it in Yosemite on the top of Half Dome. Commutes would be non-existent, I could visit family whenever I desired, and I could travel the world at no cost. Seems like a sweet gig to me!
If you could be any Roman or Greek god/goddess which one would you be and why?
Kayna: I would love to invite the Muses, who knows what artistic creativity they could inspire out of my dinner party guests. It would be a fun twist on a paint and sip party!
Adriana: Themis because I love what she represents–justice, good counsel, right order, and fairness!
Art: Hades. I have a lot of questions for him.
Steven: Hades. Within the dysfunctional pantheon, Hades seemed to be a bit more separated from the dysfunction than average. Of course, there are no winners here, but Hades at least did have a consistent job and attitude towards life’s events.
Gil: I would invite Athena and ask for some good life advice as she’s known for being very wise and intelligent.
Joe: If I could invite a Greek god to a dinner party it would be Hermes, because the trickster would be sure to create some fun.
Sara: I would like to invite Hades to a dinner party. I imagine he would have some very profound things to say about the meaning of life, being the god of the underworld. Of all the gods, he would be the most acquainted with what ultimately brings human beings lasting satisfaction.
