Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Free Friday and Congrats to SLOCA Poets!

Congratulations to Lower Middle School students Takota Clarke and Isobel Ridley for submitting original poems they wrote to the SLO Tribune. Their poems, “Untitled” (by Takota) and “A Storybook’s Magic” (by Isobel) were selected and published in last Sunday’s Living section of the paper (April 17). Here is the link to the online version: http://www.sanluisobispo.com/entertainment/arts-culture/article72423812.html

SLOCA High Schooler Kate Bischoff was also featured in this section, with her poem “No Filter.” Way to go, SLOCA poets!

Here’s a great opportunity happening this weekend for techy (and wannabe techy) students:

  • Central Coast Youth Hackathon – Saturday, April 23, at 9 am in Nipomo, CA. This free event is aimed at middle and high school students (age 13-18) who will work in mentor-supported teams to build projects in a number of different areas: Web pages, Mobile Apps, Digital Art, and Games. See link above for more info and to register. Adults, if you want to volunteer, follow this link.

And here are two E&E opportunities you may be interested in:

  • Vikings Unearthed – This NOVA documentary aired on PBS recently and is available to watch online through May 4th. Although it lines up more with last year’s history, it looks fascinating. (Parents, this show is not rated, so please use your own discretion/preview before allowing young children to watch.)
  • Richard III at the PCPA – Playing now through May 8 at the Marian Theater in Santa Maria. Here’s another local opportunity to watch live Shakespeare! This show is recommended for ages 12 and up. Follow the link above for more info, a study guide, and to purchase tickets.

Don't forget about our Pet Photo Contest for all kids ages 8-18. There's still one more week to enter! Click here for all the details.

Enjoy the gorgeous weekend ahead!
