Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Free Friday and Upcoming Student Performances

“The person who tries to live alone will not succeed as a human being. His heart withers if it does not answer another heart. His mind shrinks away if he hears only the echoes of his own thoughts and finds no other inspiration.”

~ Pearl S. Buck

Happy Friday! As you may know, we often like to take time on Fridays to reinforce the idea of taking some time over the weekend to break away from electronics and focus on the important people in your life.  This is “Free” in “Free Friday” – free from devices and technology, which often pull us away from each other.

This year we also want to take time on Fridays to emphasize Life Together, the community aspect of our school. One way we want to do that is to highlight upcoming performances or events that our SLOCA kids are involved in. We can support (and receive inspiration from, see quote above) our school community by seeing what students are doing outside of SLOCA, showing up, and cheering them on. And if you’re looking for family-friendly events anyway, why not choose something that a friend or classmate is involved in?

Even if you can’t attend, you can encourage these kids in their pursuits when you see them, and ask how it’s going. It’s nice to know about these events, and great for the kids to know that others care.

We need your help with this, of course! If your SLOCA student has an upcoming performance/show/exhibit, etc., please let us know and we can get it on the blog on Fridays. Here’s what we have to share so far, so you can get some of these on your calendar if you desire:

Live Music at Branch Street Deli – Saturday, October 29, 5:30-7:30 pm. SLOCA high school student Kate Bischoff will be singing and playing guitar on the patio of Branch Street Deli in Arroyo Grande. This one is short notice, but if you can make it out tomorrow, come grab a bite to eat and encourage this young musician!

• Teen Rad Performance Group at Farmer’s Market – November 10, about 6:30 pm, at the Higuera/Broad Street intersection. Presented by Ryan’s American Dance. SLOCA student Eden Lerner (UMS, Track B) will be dancing in this performance. The group will also have a showcase at the Cal Poly Theatre on December 9th and 10th.

Annie Jr. – November 4-6 and 11-13 at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. Presented by Coastal Youth Theater. SLOCA student Serafina Regusci (LMS, Track A) will be performing in this show. Purchase tickets at clarkcenter.org or call their Box Office at 805-489-9444.

• The Jungle Book – November 11 at 3:30 at SLOCA in room 12. A whole cast of SLOCA students will be performing a short rendition of this play for the culmination of the Theater Academy class. If you’re on campus, stop by and support these kids! (Don’t be late… it’s only about a 20 minute production.)

Babes in Toyland – December 3rd & 4th at the Clark Center for the Performing Arts in Arroyo Grande. Presented by the Coastal Chamber Youth Ballet. SLOCA students Isabel Levy and Kylie Womack (both LMS, Track B) will be performing in this show. Purchase tickets at clarkcenter.org or call their Box Office at 805-489-9444.
