Welcome back to Down Home, friends! Now that we’ve had a couple of weeks to take a deep breath, enjoy a slower pace and (hopefully) have had a bit of time to both play and rest, we want to introduce our summer blog series for 2018.
Before we get started, I (Cheryl McCabe) would like to quickly introduce myself. My family and I have been a part of the SLOCA community since 2011. My husband, Will, and I currently have 3 children attending the school. In the fall: our oldest son, Aidan, who started Kindergarten at SLOCA, starts Upper Middle School (UMS); our middle boy, Owyn, steps up this year to Lower Middle School (LMS); and their littlest brother, Quinlan, begins his Primary career. Down Home Blog has always been a valuable supplement to our homeschool experience and we are beyond grateful for Jenny Bischoff and her meticulous work curating the blog resources over the years. (Thank you, Jenny!!!)
This summer, I am thrilled to pick up the baton as we continue to share this journey together as the distinctive learning community we are known to be. The vision has not changed and our goal remains the same, “Down Home Blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because in so many ways, the heart of what happens at San Luis Obispo Academy happens down home.”
And yes, we are here to support and encourage even during summer break. As they say, the best things in life are free! So for our 2018 summer series, Freebie in SLO County!, we will give you ideas on things you can do around town and at home with your loved ones that are absolutely FREE! Join us for the next 8 weeks on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays as we explore this beautiful place we call home.
Before we list our first Freebie in SLO County! idea, we would like to remind you that we have SLOCA Summer Camps & HS Leadership Camps in just a couple of weeks, beginning July 16th. If you have any questions, please reach out to us and we’ll be more than happy to help you!
Now, without further ado…
Freebie in SLO County! – idea #1 – Central Coast Beaches
Summer is not quite summer without the beach. Here is a list of local beaches from San Simeon to Pismo. There are so many fun things you can do: collect seashells, build sand castles, skip rocks, watch the sunset, watch fireworks, the list goes on. For example, the photo above was taken at Shamel Park in Cambria with a fantastic playground just a few steps back from that shot! Go a couple of miles down the road and hunt for moonstones. The ideas are endless and if you end up going to any of them, please comment below (and send us a photo if you can!).
