We’ve said it many times, but we are a book-loving people around here! So there’s something we discovered that might interest you this summer: PBS has launched a special TV series called The Great American Read. They are describing it as “the search for America’s best-loved novel” and it’s airing all summer long.
A nationwide survey was conducted to find the top 100 novels to compete for this title. Each of these 100 books will be celebrated and explored over the course of the series, and viewers around the country can vote for their favorites! In the fall, PBS will announce the winning book in a special finale episode.
Titles range from classics to modern best-sellers, and include young adult novels too. I (Jenny) have watched part of the first episode and it’s pretty interesting! A summary of each book is given, as well as interviews with authors and celebrities about their own favorite books. As each novel is announced they will place it on their “bookshelf” until all 100 novels are revealed. You can vote once a day throughout the summer, and voting often is encouraged. The book with the most votes wins!
In our technology-driven culture, it’s so heartening to see reading and great literature promoted in this way! If you care about books, this might be a worthwhile series to follow.
You can watch The Great American Read on PBS each week as it unfolds, or catch up online here.
