“We cannot live only for ourselves. A thousand fibers connect us with our fellow men.“
~Herman Melville
Happy Friday everyone – you made it! Our first week just flew by. How did it go?
Fridays on the blog are reserved for a special purpose, and it’s something so important that we are dedicated to carving out space every week to encourage you in it. We call it “Free by 5:00” or “Free by Five” or sometimes just “Free Friday” but it means setting aside some time during the week/weekend to put away technology and social media, and focus on connecting with family, friends, and community, device-free.
While it doesn’t have to happen right at 5:00 pm on Fridays, the name provides an easy reminder to make it a priority, and to work toward consistency. And for many families, Fridays evenings are a doable time to implement this idea.
Those of you who were at our parent meeting last week heard a bit about this topic of technology and how it affects relationships and community. New parents, we encourage you to read more about WHY we feel “Free Fridays” are so important in this past blog post about Free Friday and Technology.
The quote above is a great reminder that we can’t do life alone, and the people who are naturally mostly closely connected to us are our families. SLOCA puts a big priority on family! We want to help you create time and space to play together, talk together, read together, wonder together, be outside together… these activities that happen away from technology forge strong family bonds.

And then there’s our SLOCA community. This year, we are adding a bit of a twist to our Free Friday posts, in that we will also be highlighting “Life Together,” or the community aspect of both SLOCA and family. We are connected by “a thousand fibers” on this crazy, amazing journey of classical education, and our lives are richer for those connections. Let’s lean in to life together, embrace the challenge of living in community (messiness and all), as we practice our school motto, “Semper Discentes” which is Latin for “always learning together.”
One more thing about Fridays: this fall we will take a few Fridays to help you meet and learn more about our staff and teachers with a new take on our popular “Friday Faces” series that we’ve done in the past… stay tuned!
As always, we welcome suggestions – if you have suggestions for family time, community building, or know of something happening in our SLO County community that might be of interest to our families, please let us know about it!
There are no classes on campus next Monday and Tuesday as we celebrate Labor Day, so feel free to get a jump on Education and Enrichment (E&E) hours if you’re not going somewhere fun for the holiday…
