Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Summer Together: Don’t Forget to Slow Down

Life is pretty full during the school year, and sometimes summer seems just as busy! Yet we all know we should take time over the summer break to rest and rejuvenate. How’s that going for you?

Moments of rest can suddenly appear, but we often need to plan for rest just like we plan activities. So in the midst of family vacations and summer camps and beach days and swim lessons and playdates and house projects and getting ready for next year… (deep breath) here are a few simple suggestions for both parents and kids to help slow down and make rest a part of your summer:

• Make time for activities that help you relax. Do you like to draw, knit, cook, go for walks, garden, paint, craft, sudoku, or…? Include those things on your calendar more often.

• Sit and watch the sunset… or sunrise (only if you’re an early riser, of course – otherwise you’re missing out on sleep, which is restful!) This is a beautiful and peaceful way to start or end a day. Leave your phone behind (don’t try to snap a photo – they never truly capture it!), and just enjoy the moment.

• Invest in a hammock. Or create some kind of comfortable space where you can get away from distractions. Spend time there with a good book or magazine, or just take a nap! (These kids don't actually look like they are resting…)

• Treat yourself to your favorite meal or dessert. It’s summer! Eat it slowly and savor every bite.

• Take a spontaneous road trip! Maybe this isn’t for everyone or every season of life, but if you see an opportunity to load up the family and take a day trip or weekend excursion, go for it! Leave behind all the to-do lists, activities, and projects demanding your attention, and just get away with your loved ones. Sometimes these are the best and more relaxing experiences.

How do you build in rest over the summer? We’d love to hear more ideas! Please leave a comment below…

Here are a couple of SLOCA community-building events coming up soon:

  • Romeo and Juliet – This event is SOLD OUT but we want to remind those of you who bought tickets that it’s coming up this Sunday, July 31st, at 6 pm at the Filipponi Ranch. What a fun way to spend time with others from school while experiencing Shakespeare under the stars!
  • SLOCA Day at the Ravine – This is happening next Tuesday, August 2nd! Here’s another great opportunity to get together with school friends.  Click here for tickets.
