San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Wednesday Wonders: HLR Reading

{photo by Carolyn Eicher}

For our final Wednesday Wonder of the school year, we are highlighting the incredible work of local middle and high school students featured at our recent Hanging Lantern Review Spring Reading & Release Party.

As you may know, Hanging Lantern Review is an online literary arts/culture blog and annual print magazine showcasing the talents and ideas of young adults throughout San Luis Obispo County. It is hosted and produced by SLOCA high school students.

The 2016 Spring Reading was once again held at the enchanting Dallidet Adobe in SLO, and showcased several students reading their published works of poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. It was positively delightful and inspiring to hear students read their thoughtful, well-crafted pieces. In fact, it was often hard to believe that these were only middle school and high school students!

Today we have a few photos to share, but to read these amazing pieces you’ll need to pick up a copy of this year’s Hanging Lantern Review in the school store.

Here are the students who were published this year:

Poetry:
MS
A New Life Next to the Falls (Caedin Hilton)
Ode to Rome (Dylan van Rooyen)
A Searching Soul (Raegan Lunceford)

HS
Driving the Columbia River (Shelby Dorman)
In Others’ Time of War (Meg Campbell)
Vacuole (Isaiah Smith)
Where the Sea Worshippers Graze (Reagan Lee)
Tin Type (Joshua Ronda)

Fiction:

Sancho’s Island (Elijah Holton)

HS
A Conversation (Gracielle Li)
The Dress-Up Trunk (Eden Theule)
Growing Up (Haley HaynesCarstens)
Run (Caleb Campbell)
Not My Obsession (Brigitte Rein)

Students, there will be another issue next year, and another chance to submit your work!

Finally, here are a few more photos from this beautiful evening:
