Happy Monday! Today we veer from the usual history links to celebrate the culmination of The Prince and the Pauper with a few fun movie versions and adaptations. We've enjoyed this book immensely and hope you’ll find one or more of the following options useful to celebrate this story (and to compare to the original classic!):
Mickey Mouse in Disney’s The Prince and the Pauper (1990) – also available on Netflix, episode 2 of the series:
The Prince and the Pauper (1996) – This is the first episode in an 8-part series, adapted and produced by Julian Fellowes. It's in English, but the first two episodes have Dutch subtitles… we don’t know why. (That’s YouTube for you!):
The Prince and the Pauper (1975) – Here’s the first episode of another TV series adaptation, available on YouTube:
The Prince and the Pauper (1937) – This is the black and white version with Errol Flynn. It doesn’t appear to be available to stream, but you can purchase the dvd, or check out the dvd from the library – it's in the Blackgold library system.
Disney’s The Prince and the Pauper (1962) TV-PG – This is the non-animated Disney version of the story, available to rent on Amazon, or you can also rent it on YouTube.
Crossed Swords (1977) PG – This was released in the UK as The Prince and the Pauper, and is a retelling of the story featuring a star-studded cast! Available on dvd only.
The Prince and the Pauper (2000) TV-Family – Looks like this is only available used on dvd.
A Modern Twain Story: The Prince and the Pauper: (PG) – A modern twist on the story, available to rent on Amazon, or you can rent it on YouTube.
Garfield: A Tale of Two Kitties (2006) PG – Apparently this is also a retelling of the Twain story, despite the Dickens-inspired title. Available to rent on Amazon.
Barbie as The Princess and the Pauper (2014) TV-Y – Okay, this is stretching it a bit, but it’s an adaptation of the story! Available to rent on Amazon.
Ken Burns: American Lives (2002) TV-PG – Episodes 7 and 8 of this series comprise a 2-part biography about Mark Twain, available to stream for free with Amazon Prime.
Does anyone know of any other great movie versions or adaptations of this story? Or another interesting documentary about Twain? Leave a comment and let us know!
