Wednesdays are the best around here at Down Home. We love hearing from SLOCA parents about fun or special moments from your home days – those moments of wonder that elicit smiles, giggles, or simply gratefulness that we have the opportunity to educate our kids in this unique way.
Today we hear from Track A mom Julie Leppelmeier. Julie and her husband David have 3 kids enrolled – Jake (Intermediate), Harry (Primary), and Nolan (Primary), along with younger sister Stella at home. This is their 3rd year at SLO Classical Academy.
I started making individual checklists for the boys to follow on home days, and I added a few “fun” items in addition to their usual work from the grid (I got this idea from Mrs. Wallace in her Friday “Homeschool” class). They can do their work in any order they choose, as long as it all gets done (also new, and a total hit). One of the lines I added was “read to Stella for 5 minutes.” Above is Jake reading Henny Penny – he was super animated, and used different voices for all of the characters (I've never heard him do that!). Harry and Nolan loved it, too, and they talked about that book all day long.
Thanks for sharing this, Julie! Brilliant idea to add in some fun items to the checklist – not only did this one help keep Stella engaged, but they are making fond memories together (and maybe mom gets a quick break?)
If you have a Wednesday Wonder to share on the blog, please email us! We would love to hear about the small wonders happening in your family.
