San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Friday Faces 2015: Lead Team

{photo credit: Jessica Wilson, staff photos: Michelle Dorman}

Hey everyone, it's not too late  – we are celebrating our first decade of educating for life, and this month’s family activity is a show at the Melodrama!  Date: Saturday November 14th.  Get your tickets here: http://bit.ly/1YGiV0Y

This week on Friday Faces we bring you SLOCA’s Lead Team. These are the incredible leaders who serve our school in countless ways. Thank you ladies, for all you do, both seen and unseen, and for participating today:

Susie Theule

Visionary and Executive Director (but my favorite role is SLOCA mom of four – no, three.  One successfully off to college! <sniff>)

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A:  Since the very beginning – just over 10 years now.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A:  I think SLOCA discovered me, and our family.  I had no plans to be working in education, to be home schooling part time, to have our kids in a private school.  In our search to find something that would help us fulfill our dreams for our kids, we fell in love with classical education, with the hybrid model, and with all those things could offer us.  One thing led to another, and here we are…10 years in, no regrets!

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  I don't remember thinking about it too much, but in third grade, I remember telling my class, in circle time on the carpet, that I wanted to be a trash man.  In our neighborhood, the trash guys got to ride outside of the truck on the back.  I thought standing there with the wind in my hair, braving the roads on the outside of the cab sounded really fun.  In high school, I wanted to own my own interior design business, and originally set my college course towards that direction.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A:  Hmph.  No idea.  I am guessing about 25.  I probably use about 15 of those at most though?

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Fresh tomatoes, artichoke hearts and really good cheese. I like trying weird pizza toppings too at fancy restaurants, but we don't do that too often!

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: This has been a fun fall for reading.  I am reading The Road to Character by David Brooks and have a huge Flannery O'Connor collection going.  I have enjoyed Hanna Coulter by Wendell Berry, Holes by Louis Sachar, Gary Schmidt's new book, Orbiting Jupiter, and Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury.  In the educational world, I am reading Excellent Sheep: the Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life by Deresiewicz and Education's End: Why our Colleges and Universities Have Given Up on the Meaning of Life by Kronman.  Sometimes I read, sometimes I listen to the books on audible.  I can fit more reading in that way!

Kateri Rein

High School and Enrichment Director

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A:  Since almost the beginning.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A:  In June 2005, a friend told me about this “new school” that was going to be starting in the fall, so we went to one of the original info meetings to hear more.  I was drawn to the fact that it was classical education and a hybrid model.  Our oldest started in Trimester 2 of that first year as a 5th grader (siblings joining the following year).  In 2009, that 5th grader and some of her friends were ready for high school, but not ready to leave SLOCA, so our HS program was established and my job description of Enrichment Director expanded to include High School Director.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  At various times – artist, dancer and/or mother

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A:  Maybe 6 (I prefer to be barefoot.)

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A:  I’m not picky, although not much of a meat eater, guess I go for veggie pizzas.

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A:  Although not my usual genre (sci fi), I enjoyed reading Freya's Inferno this past winter.  It is set in SLO and written by our high school science teacher, Sonja Bair (her first book!).

Amy Calloway

Admissions Director and Parent Care

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: This is our 9th year.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A: I applied for a job here and then when I found what it was, I applied for my son to attend.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: A crossing guard

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: 30ish

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: White sauce, chicken, garlic, olives, mushrooms

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: The Name of the Wind (Kingkiller Chronicle)

Cozy Faber

Development Director

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: This is my 9th year as a parent.  8th year as a staff member.

Q: What brought you here? How did you discover our school?
A: A friend of mine mentioned SLOCA in passing one day.  It intrigued me and I searched high and low until I found it!

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A:  A stage performer

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: 17

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: Sausage

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: I am reading three books right now:  Flash Boys— a book about high frequency trading, The Great Divergence— a book about income inequality in the US and Unbroken (which most everyone knows about!)

Ashley Walter

Dean of Students

Q: How long have you been at SLOCA?
A: I started on July 27th.

Q: What brought you here?
A: Although I ended up going to college in my home state of Washington to save on tuition, I originally discovered the beautiful central coast when I was accepted to Cal Poly in 2001. Three years after finishing grad school, I still yearned to explore living on the beautiful central coast, so I decided to stop wondering, and to start wandering! During my exploration phase of California and beyond in 2009-2011, I met my husband. He was raised on a ranch in north county, where we were married this last April.

Q: How did you discover our school?
A: After several years of working in various public school settings from urban sprawl to a migrant community, with students ranging from elementary to high school, I was eager to transition into a dynamic school administrative position, within a non-traditional school setting. I found SLOCA online while searching for local private schools, and the Dean of Students position seemed to be an ideal opportunity.

Q: When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A: When I was a very little girl, I wanted to own my own dance studio, and also be an actress while being a mom of twins. I was very ambitious! In the eighth grade, my logic set in, and I decided on a more practical path. I was fortunate enough to work with a wonderful school counselor named Mr. Johnson. He, along with other Guidance Counselors throughout my academic career inspired me to be a School Counselor, which was my previous role for 7 years before moving into school administration.

Q: How many pairs of shoes do you own?
A: 35, including my tap shoes. Embarrassing!!!

Q: What do you like on your pizza?
A: My favorite pizza is Canadian bacon, pineapple, daiya cheese and basil, along with any other available vegetables.

Q: Name a book you read this summer and enjoyed, or have read this year.
A: I am currently diving into one of the SLOCA recommended reads, The Well Trained Mind: A Guide to Classical Education at Home.
