Start by doing what’s necessary; then do what’s possible; and suddenly you are doing the impossible.
~Saint Francis of Assisi
Hooray for Fridays! How are you feeling after week 1? If you’re a bit overwhelmed, don’t worry – it takes a little time to adjust and feel settled, but it will come! The above quote is a great reminder that we start by doing what we can, and move on to the next thing.
For those of you new to SLO Classical Academy or Down Home, Fridays on the blog are what we call “Free Fridays” or “Free by 5:00 Fridays.” This doesn’t mean it’s a day off – we still have our home day assignments to finish up, and optional Friday Foundations and Academy Classes/Clubs happening on campus. But we do like to encourage our families to plan some time over the weekend to set aside technology and social media, and focus on connecting with family and friends (just like in the good old days before all the devices and gadgets…)
(Let's hear it for the 80s! Photo, right – me at 8 years old with my dad and little brother and sister.)
While it doesn’t need to happen right at 5:00 on Fridays, the name is an easy reminder to make it a priority. Here on the blog we will offer ideas and inspiration to help you include some Free by 5:00 time in your family’s routine. And when there are family-friendly community events happening, we will try to highlight those here. (We welcome suggestions – if you know of something happening in our community that might be of interest to our families, please let us know about it!)
To read more about WHY we feel “Free Fridays” are so important, see last year’s blog post about Free Friday and Technology.
But first, we will bring back our popular fall blog series called “Friday Faces.” Starting next week we will be setting aside several Fridays to introduce you to our amazing and dedicated team of SLOCA teachers and staff. On these Fridays you’ll see a short feature of a few teachers or staff members, letting you know what they do here at SLOCA, with a photo and a little bit about them. We hope you will enjoy meeting these friendly “Friday Faces” online and then greet them on campus too!
One more thing before we send you off into Labor Day weekend. SLO Classical Academy is celebrating its 10th birthday this year, and as one of many little ways to commemorate this, all next week we will have this banner hanging in downtown SLO – look for it!
There are no classes on campus next Monday and Tuesday, so you can use that time for E&E if you’re not going somewhere fun for the holiday!
