Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

A: The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin.  It was read to our class by my 6th grade teacher and I fell in love with it.  I read it every few years and 2 years ago read it to my boys over the summer.

Q: What is your favorite piece of literature that we've read at SLOCA?

A: This is the hardest question to answer.  It is probably easier to answer for each year we have done.  Keep in mind, my children were mostly in Primary and Intermediate, so I have read the younger versions of some of these stories.  Although, we as a family look forward to reading different versions as they get older.

Year 1:  Ancients:  The Trojan Horse and Cupid and Psyche

Year 2:  Medieval Times:  Robin Hood, but my boys also list Beowulf as a top favorite

Year 3:  Renaissance:  The Stories of Don Quixote and The Tempest, my youngest son's favorite book was A Midsummer Night's Dream

Year 4:  Modern Times:  Elijah of Buxton and Treasure Island
