I would trade all of my technology for an afternoon with Socrates.
~ Steve Jobs
Happy Friday! We’ve used this quote around here before, but it’s a great one to get us back into our “Free by Five Friday” routine. In this digital age, we encourage our families to make some time to spend together, device-free. If it so happens that Friday evenings are a good time to implement this strategy, go for it and let “Free by Five Friday” be a special tradition for your family. If it doesn’t always work to keep the same day and time (although it often helps to keep it as consistent as possible when developing a habit), be flexible but do your best to focus on spending a chunk of face-to-face time interacting with each other. It’s not easy, and it’s not getting any easier, but it’s worth it.
We think Steve Jobs would agree. Here’s a recent article from the New York Times that you might find interesting (click here or click on the image below to read the full article):
The last paragraph is especially compelling:
“Every evening Steve made a point of having dinner at the big long table in their kitchen, discussing books and history and a variety of things,” he said. “No one ever pulled out an iPad or computer. The kids did not seem addicted at all to devices.”
Perhaps that is a little surprising, but definitely encouraging and thought-provoking! Let's keep discussing books and history and a variety of things together…
Have a wonderful weekend, and love on that awesome family of yours!
