We are an independent school providing classical education (with a twist) for preschool-high school (+ infant/toddler care) on the Central Coast of California. SLOCA unites a timeless education with small class sizes and a collaborative, integrated learning environment at every level. For over 15 years, SLOCA has been a place where families matter and every child is seen. This blog is meant to support and encourage parents on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens in education happens Down Home.

Anticipation has been building on the middle schoo

Anticipation has been building on the middle school track team as they approach their first meet this Saturday! Here’s an update from our MS track coach, Jill Richert, on how our team has been training in preparation for competitions.

“Our team focus is learning fundamental track skills and etiquette, practicing good sportsmanship, and encouraging our teammates. We are having a lot of fun getting to know one another better and bonding as a team. We hope that at the end of the season, each participant will be able to complete a thorough warm-up for track and field, so our bodies are ready to run, jump, and throw with less chance of injury. We also practice the components of good form for running through focused drills, as well as core strengthening as a part of most practices.

We practice on the SLOCA field, at the Cal Poly track, and occasionally at other sites near campus. We have been introducing the various events of middle school track, giving each athlete an opportunity to try them and, as the season goes on, focus on the ones he or she is most interested in entering in the meets. The events available in most middle school meets are: the various running races, hurdles, long jump, high jump, shot put, and discus.”

Our families are getting in the 5k spirit by coloring their shirts in for race day! The RUNaissance is happening THIS SATURDAY, April 27th! We're so excited to welcome you and see all the fun designs and colors on your shirts. If you haven't had the chance to pick up your shirt, be sure to swing by the front office this week so you can create your masterpiece in time for the big day!

As these classes will be together in Upper Middle School this fall, we are attempting to build those connections early on.
