Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

The Amazing Art of Penmanship

Penmanship is a fading art and skill in our country, but we don’t want it to be! Here at SLO Classical Academy we still teach handwriting, and encourage kids to learn cursive as well. If this sometimes seems like an unimportant subject, or your student is lacking motivation to write with his or her best penmanship, watch this video about artist and Master Penman Jake Weidmann. There are only 12 Master Penmen in the world, and Jake is the youngest. His work is phenomenal and this fascinating video about him is sure to inspire you and your kids:

If you enjoyed that, Jake Weidmann also gave a TED Talk called “Why Write? Penmanship for the 21st Century.” In this talk about the future of writing in the digital age, Jake “explores the connections between the pen and how we learn, think, and carry our cultural heritage at a time when the very act of writing is being dropped from school curricula across the country.” Check it out:

(And here’s a link to Jake’s website, if you want to learn more about him and what he does.)

So don’t give up on handwriting! It is still relevant in today’s world. We know these videos will inspire our young artists out there, but even if your child doesn’t want to become an artist, we hope both you and your kids will be motivated to keep developing creative literacy through the practice of penmanship.
