Penmanship is a fading art and skill in our country, but we don’t want it to be! Here at SLO Classical Academy we still teach handwriting, and encourage kids to learn cursive as well. If this sometimes seems like an unimportant subject, or your student is lacking motivation to write with his or her best penmanship, watch this video about artist and Master Penman Jake Weidmann. There are only 12 Master Penmen in the world, and Jake is the youngest. His work is phenomenal and this fascinating video about him is sure to inspire you and your kids:
If you enjoyed that, Jake Weidmann also gave a TED Talk called “Why Write? Penmanship for the 21st Century.” In this talk about the future of writing in the digital age, Jake “explores the connections between the pen and how we learn, think, and carry our cultural heritage at a time when the very act of writing is being dropped from school curricula across the country.” Check it out:
