SLO Classical Academy is proud to host William Deresiewicz, an award-winning essayist and critic, a frequent college speaker, and the best-selling author of Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life on Thursday, March 7th. He was a professor of English at Yale for ten years and a graduate instructor at Columbia for five. His essay “The Disadvantages of an Elite Education” has been viewed over one million times online.

Join us at Harold J Miossi Cultural & Performing Arts Center (CPAC) at Cuesta College to hear Deresiewicz’s critique on the education system’s herd mentality. Homemade concessions will be available for purchase on the green just outside the theater at 6:00 pm. Bill D. will take the stage at 7:00 pm.

As a professor at Yale, William Deresiewicz saw something that troubled him deeply. Some of the nation’s brightest minds were adrift when it came to thinking critically and creatively and finding a sense of purpose. Excellent Sheep takes a sharp look at the high-pressure conveyor belt that culminates in the skewed applications Deresiewicz saw firsthand as a member of Yale’s admissions committee. It is essential, says Deresiewicz, that college be a time for self-discovery, when students can establish their own values and measures of success.

Tickets: $35

Haven’t heard of him?  Snag your copy of his book, Excellent Sheep: The Miseducation of the American Elite and the Way to a Meaningful Life, in The Den bookstore (165 Grand Ave.) and read about his critique of education’s herd mentality.

“I’ve heard it said that novels are obsolete, that books like War and Peace belong to an age when information could be delivered only in extremely inefficient forms. But War and Peace doesn’t tell you the same kinds of things that you can learn from a blog post or a Wikipedia entry, not even fourteen hundred pages of them. It needs to be big and complex because it’s telling you something that’s big and complex. It doesn’t give you “information”; it gives you life.” — William Deresiewicz, Excellent Sheep
