RACHEL HOXIE

Kindergarten + Intermediate Art Teacher

Rachel went to UC Davis and Cal Poly, receiving a BA in English Literature and Teaching Credentials in English & Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, respectively. Before teaching at SLOCA, she used her love for art and children at the SLO Museum of Art, teaching kid’s classes there. Now she’s our 3rd/4th grade Art Teacher! Rachel loves the literature, history, and art we learn at SLOCA. Often – if she is not surfing, paddle boarding, walking, or gardening, creating art, or with my head in a great book – you will find her in one of her greatest roles as a "Mom Taxi" running her kids to and from waterpolo or leadership meetings etc., etc. etc.! When it comes to her lifelong passion for learning, two sparking experiences really stand out for her. One, was when her Dad read "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" out loud to her family when she was young. This literature was so rich with well developed characters hobbits, wizards, dwarfs, dragons, in addition to the life lessons. Another, was when her Dad casually read to her Pablo Neruda's "Ode to My Socks" when she was in fifth grade. She remembers that she couldn’t believe that a poem about socks could be so exquisitely beautiful! Rachel wants to learn more about Classical Education and become fluent in the four year curriculum. Also, she always wants to learn more about art—ancient techniques, modern techniques, and new artists. She plans on traveling the world with my family as it can be an excellent way to further educate her children!
