A Day in the Life: High School Edition!

Welcome back to our popular Day in the Life series. Today we get to hear a bit more about the high school life at SLOCA! Folks are always curious about our high school. What is the workload like? How do students manage their time? What else do they do besides school? Those are just a few questions that have come up in the past. Well, today, we’ll get to peek in on a school and a home day.

Sharing about her days is one of our seniors, Carina Womack. The Womack family: Larry, Veronica, Carina and Kylie (7th grade) are in their 11th year at SLOCA.

School Day

7:30-8 am

I always have the intention of getting up early to make a nice breakfast, but the bliss of an extra thirty minutes of sleep always wins. Cuddling with these guys is also a must in the morning.

8:00-9:00am

I spend most of this time getting ready, packing my lunch and grabbing miscellaneous papers, but on most mornings, there’s a brief intermission for a dance party. It’s the only way I’ll fully wake up. My dad makes me a fresh iced latte in my tumbler, and I head out the door.

9:35-10:45am

I have history class with Ms. Shotwell where we are finishing up a discussion on China’s new Silk Road (it’s so crazy) and begin to learn about Muhammad and Islam.

10:50-12:00pm

I have English class with Mr. McCullough. We just finished up St. Augustine’s Confessions, so we discuss the last few chapters. He summarizes the key points of the book, Infinite Games, and draws the parallel between Augustine’s idea of how to live a good life and the book’s claim. I leave class with a lot to think about.

12:00-1:00pm

I spend Monday lunches in student council meetings. We are working on amending our constitution and planning some fun stuff for Spirit Week.

1:00-2:10pm

I have Spanish as my last class of the day. We go over our homework and spend the rest of class labeling the states of Mexico. At the end of class, everybody selects two states which they will present on the following week. I am presenting on Oaxaca and Zacatecas.

2:10-3:15

I do my chore up at the high school campus and then head home before the rain starts. Once home I quickly change into workout clothes.

3:30-4:45

Our neighbor is recovering from ACL surgery, so I take their dog Toby on a 5-mile run…in the rain. Definitely a more interesting run, but it made us run a little faster.

5:00-6:00

I unpackage a new bag that I’ve been saving for, so I head into my room to clear a shelf to display it. I’m weird like that. While there I tidy up the floor from this morning’s hustle to get out the door.

6:00-6:30

My mom has bible study at 7, so I head out to the kitchen while she cooks dinner to catch up and talk about our day.

7:00-8:30ish

I unwind in my bedroom with some Netflix and I start my bullet journal for March (I always try to stay a month ahead.)

9:00

My dad tells me to meet him in the car. This means we’re going on a milkshake date. Shhhh….don’t tell mom!

9:30-10:00

I text with my college roommate who lives in Louisiana. We’re planning our dorm! Haha!

10:00-11:15

I read a few chapters of a book for my senior project called Are You Okay? by Kati Morton. I write down some notes in my notebook and then it’s lights out!

Home Day

7:30

My sleep tracker goes off and I begrudgingly get up and quickly wrap myself in my Sherpa blanket.

7:30-8:30

I get ready and make a quick breakfast only to realize that I’m going to be late for work.

8:45-12:00

I spend Tuesday mornings at our church working in the childcare for a mother’s bible study. I work in the 0-2y/o room and we have fourteen little ones. They’re all pretty happy today, so that makes the morning go very smooth.

12:00-1:00

I come home, change into workout clothes, and heat up leftover quinoa and steak for lunch.

1:00-2:30

Our English assignment is to read and annotate the prologue to Chaucer. I’m super excited to read this book!

2:45-3:00

I show my mom my dorm Pinterest board that my roommate and I have been creating.

3:00-4:00

History homework is to read a packet she handed out in class, and complete an ID/S on Muhammed and Islam. It takes way longer than it should because my dog is insistent that he needs to sit right on top of my papers.

4:15-5:30

I take Toby on a 5.5-mile run. It’s not as pouring as it was yesterday, so we’re both a little happier…but still wet.

6:00-8:00ish

Karenna and I head over to AGHS to watch the AGHS girls’ varsity basketball game.

8:00-9:00ish

I begin my Spanish project on Oaxaca and start some of the slides.

9:00-9:45

In film class, my second-semester elective, we were assigned to write a reflection on The General as well as read the “Hay’s Code,” so I finish that up.

10:00-11:00

I get ready for bed, shower and pack my bag for the morning

These are both pretty typical days for me. Having been at SLOCAHS for three and a half years now, I have time management down to a science which enables me to add in work, time with friends and some free time if I’m wise with my time. As I graduate in June, I feel more than confident and prepared for college after having learned and practiced these skills of time management and also enjoying school and life amidst a substantial workload.
