San Luis Obispo Classical Academy San Luis Obispo Classical Academy

Welcome to Down Home, San Luis Obispo Classical Academy’s blog! We are a classical school offering several options to make our education work for families with infants through high schoolers. Our signature hybrid program, which is part-time classroom and part-time home instruction, provides an engaging education for preschool through middle school (with full time options available). We also have a university model high school. This blog is meant to support and encourage on the home front because, in so many ways, the heart of what happens at SLO Classical Academy happens down home.

Joining us for our Wednesday Wonderings post today is our Wisdom & Wonder Project Team. This is an incredible team comprised of educators, parents, artists, and contributors that truly encompasses the whole scholastic package. The uniquely curated curriculum provides its subscribers with all the tools necessary to engage children’s hearts and minds.

If you’re looking for ways on how to share this project with your family and friends or how to explain the classical education aspect of the project to those who may not be familiar with this approach, we encourage you to read on!

For a long time now, people who don’t live near us have asked if there are other schools like ours, the San Luis Obispo Classical Academy, in the country.  Until now, we haven’t had the bandwidth to help––we had to first focus on developing our educational model and school community before reaching beyond our classroom walls. This year, we decided it was time, and so began the Wisdom Wonder Project! We are taking all the years of experience our staff has brought and gained these last 15 years and repackaging it for teachers and parents, wherever they are, in easy-to-follow, easy-to-fall-in-love-with, rich, beautiful, inspiring collections.

The Wisdom Wonder Project is a curriculum-based subscription service filled with rich and beautiful collections––sparking wonder and wisdom in your children. Taking our approach to Classical Education (with a twist), we’ve packaged our subjects into monthly units that can be digitally downloaded & implemented at home, in the classroom, or on the road. Simply sign up for one, or a bundle, of subjects and receive one unit, ready to teach, in your account every month––spending more time teaching and less time prepping!

What’s available now?

We have launched Preschool and these lessons are ready for purchase now.  Next will follow Junior K and Kindergarten in April 2019 to complete our Little Wonders subscription program, before moving on to Primary grades and up in 2020.

These monthly subscriptions are designed to provide a well-balanced plate of learning on that particular subject, at the appropriate developmental level. Seen as the foundation to learning, we offer Literature as our Little Wonders main course––reading a book per week with curated activities and lessons to guide you and your child(ren) through great books, discussions, and engage their imagination. From there, explore our side dishes, like Block Play or Little Masters, our art collection.

Beyond the Curriculum

More than just rich, beautiful lessons, the Wisdom Wonder Project is a community of fellow homeschoolers and teachers from all over the world and different walks of life. Find a home base to connect with like-minded educators in our subscriber-only forum, or follow our Little by Little blog for more resources and inspiration. This is more than just an educational subscription service, it’s a community to encourage you and your family along your journey.

We encourage you to pursue the good, the true, and the beautiful with your children and we will show you how to do this.  We’ll remind you that life passes quickly, so slow down and learn with your kids, explore the world around and within us, and we will help you create a very manageable, wonderful and imperfect learning environment for you and your children. We provide inspiration, ideas, and support for parents and educators to create opportunities for this wonder and growth. In sum, we offer you a veritable feast for learning.

Some FAQ’s

Is buying a unit a la carte helpful to me if I don’t train my kids classically? Can they still understand and benefit from this approach?

Yes! The great thing about our curriculum is that it can be used as a comprehensive approach to learning, or in addition to other curriculums. Information in the overviews, available at the beginning of each unit, will walk the educator through how to implement the activities and lessons, what materials are needed, and suggestions for scheduling. The a la carte section is a great way to either try out a month or two from a collection before subscribing or try a holiday packet to delve deeper with your family/classroom into why we celebrate.

Can the language of classical education be easily understood by those who are outside this approach but are interested in the curriculum?

Since classical education is designed around developmental learning levels, it can be an easy transition for educators and students. It is both historically and content-rich, as well, so there is lots to immerse in if you want to understand deeper. There is always a learning curve when learning new models, so be patient with yourself, and stay curious!

How much time am I looking at devoting to preparing lesson plans and setting up for the activities?

Our desire is to take as much prep and research off the educator’s plate, so you can spend more time engaging with your child(ren). With that said, we do suggest reading through the monthly unit before beginning, and allowing some time to order or gather any books and supplies you will need. Allowing a few hours every month to get set up should be more than enough to set you and your child(ren) up for success (and some fun!).

How far should I plan ahead?

Pro Tip: we suggest downloading units a month or two in advance (ex. download March’s unit in January or February) to allow time to order supplies, borrow books from the library, and read ahead so you don’t have to rush when the time comes to teach. With that said, we encourage you to find your own rhythm and work at a pace that is natural for you and your family.

What am I really getting for the “group” vs “single” pricing?

The group subscriptions are designed with more than one child in mind––it can be an affordable way to share subscriptions with other educators (up to 6 users) while gaining extra direction in how to implement our curriculum in a group environment. There is anything from special group activities to helpful tips and tricks for teaching multiple children.

What’s coming down the line? What’s in store?

LOTS. Preschool is available now, with Junior K and Kindergarten available in April to complete our 3 year Little Wonders subscriptions. From there, we will be continually adding more collections to Little Wonders (Nature Play, anyone?!), more a la carte units for multiple levels, and looking to Primary grades and up in 2020. The best way to keep in the loop is to subscribe to our newsletter––we will keep you updated on all that is happening around here!
